Hi, I'm Joe Dallas — a potter based in Columbus, Georgia, and the hands behind every piece you'll find in this shop.
I started throwing pottery because I was drawn to the idea of making things that people actually use. Not objects that sit behind glass, but bowls that hold your morning oatmeal, mugs that warm your hands on a cold morning, and vases that bring a little life to a windowsill. There's something deeply satisfying about that — knowing a piece I made is woven into someone's daily life.
The Wheel-Throwing Process
Every piece in this shop starts as a lump of raw clay on the wheel. Wheel throwing is one of the oldest forms of pottery — a technique that's been around for thousands of years — and it still requires the same thing it always has: patience, feel, and a lot of practice.
Here's how it works:
- Centering — The clay is wedged to remove air bubbles, then centered on the spinning wheel. This is the foundation of everything. If the clay isn't centered, nothing that follows will be right.
- Opening & Pulling — Once centered, I open the clay and pull the walls upward, shaping the form with my hands inside and outside simultaneously.
- Shaping — This is where each piece takes on its character. A slight curve here, a wider lip there — small decisions that make each piece one of a kind.
- Drying & Trimming — The piece dries slowly to a leather-hard state, then is trimmed and refined on the wheel before a final air dry.
- Bisque Firing — The dried piece goes into the kiln for its first firing, hardening the clay into ceramic.
- Glazing — Each piece is hand-glazed. I mix and test my own glazes, so colors and finishes can vary slightly — that's intentional, and part of what makes handmade pottery special.
- Glaze Firing — The final firing fuses the glaze to the clay, bringing out the color and creating the finished surface you see.
The Materials
I work primarily with stoneware clay — a durable, food-safe clay body that fires to a beautiful, slightly textured finish. All glazes I use are food-safe and lead-free, so every piece is made to be used, not just admired.

When you buy a piece from Joe Dallas Pottery, you're getting something that no machine made and no factory produced. Every curve was shaped by hand. Every glaze was applied with intention. There may be a slight variation in size, color, or texture from piece to piece — and that's not a flaw. That's the signature of something truly handmade.
