Vases

A vase is one of the few forms where the emptiness is part of the point. You make it to hold something, but it has to hold its own first — the shape, the glaze, the way it occupies a shelf or a table without demanding too much attention.

These were all thrown on the wheel, which means the form comes from the interaction between the clay and the hands working it. That process leaves a subtle record in the finished piece — a slight unevenness, a responsiveness in the walls — that you can feel when you hold it. Put flowers in it, or don't. Either way, it earns its place.
